Ma'alla Cemetery
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is characterized by being full of important heritage places that have a great and ancient history, and the Al-Ma’ala cemetery is one of the prominent signs in the heritage of Saudi Arabia, which is located in the holy city of Makkah.
This cemetery is located at the beginning of Al-Hujun Road, to the right of the person heading to the Great Mosque of Mecca, from the direction of the Al-Maabdah neighborhood in Makkah Al-Mukarramah, and to the north of the Grand Mosque.
The scholars revealed that in previous eras, Al-Ma’alla was outside the urban area of the city of Makkah Al-Mukarramah, and that was until the Umayyad era only.
The cemetery contains a number of places equipped for washing and shrouding the dead, in addition to that, there are a number of ambulances that transport the dead, and this is within a special administration that follows the Secretariat of the Holy Capital.
The dead are usually carried to the Al-Mu’alla cemetery after praying for them inside the Grand Mosque, in order for the funeral worshipers to carry the funeral to the cemetery to be buried.
As for the history of the cemetery, it belonged to the people of Makkah from the pre-Islamic era until the present time. It includes the tombs of Bani Hashim from the grandfathers of the Prophet, in addition to his uncles and some companions and followers.
There was an old wall, which was built with stones, as it surrounded the Al-Ma’alla cemetery, and Ibrahim Pasha revealed in his entourage: “On Wednesday, 29 Rabi’ al-Akhir in the year 1086 AH, Sheikh Muhammad Ali bin Suleiman, the minister who came from Yemen, began to demolish the graves of Al-Ma’alla, and the construction of the graves was completed. A private cemetery with four walls that was divided in an orderly manner, as he made two doors for it, and he was one of those who was fond of organizing Mecca and the rituals of Hajj.
The construction of the wall was renewed several times by the Secretariat of the Holy Capital, but it is now in the modern armed style, and Al-Ma’alla is one of the most important and largest tombs that are still present, besides that the burial is still going on in it to this day.
One grave is used in the grave more than once, so we find that whenever the cemetery is filled, the grave is cleaned, in order to be used again.
The leakage of sewage water during the last period caused great damage to the cemetery, inside the graves due to its lower level than the level of the streets that surround it, so a project was launched in it to re-equip the graves again and raise the level of the cemetery floor, so that it becomes higher than the level of the surrounding roads .
In the past, when the dead were buried, the dead was buried in the cemetery, and a mark was placed on his grave in order to distinguish his place as a witness, but this mark was made of a rectangular stone with irregular ribs, which was cut from the mountains of the region.
In addition, he engraves the name of the deceased through a sunken or prominent font, and that is with some verses and supplications, but at times the date is written in order to clarify the day, month and year.
But with the passage of time, it was noticed that the features of the graves changed in addition to the scattering of the witness stones that were written on them in various types of Arabic scripts from hundreds of years ago. In order to be a cover or as a mark on the grave of the deceased.
