The Abraj Al Bait Makkah complex was built on the ruins of an ancient fortress known as Ajyad Castle, attributed to Sharif Surur bin Musaed. King Fahd ordered the establishment of the foundation of the Two Holy Mosques, which was completed after his death, by the Crown Prince, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz. Work on the project began with the removal of the historic castle and then the removal of the mountain located at the top of the castle. The project lasted nearly nine years.
