It was made of wood and surrounded the room. Lead boards were placed over the wood where they were fixed with nails. And covered with tarpaulin gowns in order to be preserved from rain, dust and any weather factors.

While during the reign of King Hassan bin Muhammad bin Qalawun, the dome was renewed and restored in the year 765 AH, and this came due to the imbalance of the lead plates, which we find moved from their position due to weather factors, so Sultan Shaban bin Hassan bin Muhammad worked on repairing it, and in the year 881 AH For the second time, a defect occurred and it was repaired, and that was during the reign of Sultan Qaytbay. During the following years, it was restored and repaired, and many domes were built with a distinct engineering and architectural heritage.

A major fire occurred in the Prophet’s Mosque in the year 886 AH during the reign of Sultan Qaytbay, so he issued an order to completely renovate the sanctuary and between it was the dome, which was renovated so that it would be on solid pillars, which was established on the land of the Prophet’s Mosque, and it was built with a height of 18 cubits, i.e. It is approximately 8.88 meters long, and is decorated with a number of stones carved from black stones.

Why is it called the green dome?

After we know the history of building the green dome in the Prophet’s Mosque, and the stages of its restoration and renewal over the years, we must know why it was called the Green Dome.

The one who dyed the dome green for the first time was Sultan Abdul Hamid Al-Othmani, and that was in the year 1253 AH, when he issued a decision to dye it, and it has continued to be renewed in that color to this day when needed.

 It was called the green dome due to its color. In the past, it was known as the wooden color, then the white color, and later the Faiha, and then the blue.
