Information about the doors of the Prophet's Mosque

The Prophet’s Mosque is considered one of the mosques that enjoys great sanctity because of its great importance, as it was built by our master Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, in Medina, after his migration in the year 1 AH 622, and it was next to his house after the construction of the Quba Mosque, which is the first place on the island. It was lit by electric lamps in the year one thousand nine hundred and twenty-seven.

In the past, the Prophet’s Mosque had three doors, and this was in its first structure, which are:

1- It is a door located at the back of the mosque (it is located in the direction of the qiblah today), where the qiblah was to Bait al-Maqdis, but after the qiblah shifted from Bait al-Maqdis to the Kaaba on Tuesday 15/8/2 AH, in which the door was closed in the southern wall And we will notice that it was replaced by a door in the northern wall. In addition, three galleries were made on the south side, similar to those on the northern side, and Bab Othman and Bab Atika were preserved.

2- The second gate was on the west side, which was known as Bab Atika, while today it is called Bab al-Rahma.

3- The third door, which was located on the east side and was called Bab Othman, and today it is known as Bab Jibril, and many expansions came later on it.

And we will notice that after Omar Ibn Al-Khattab, may God be pleased with him, expanded the Prophet’s Mosque, the Prophet’s Mosque had six doors, and this means that three doors were added to the doors of the Prophet’s Mosque that were not present.

The number of doors of the Prophet’s Mosque continued to increase during the expansions that came to it throughout history, until you will find that in the current era it reached about a hundred doors in addition, next to a door of a very large size regarding the courtyards of the Prophet’s Mosque, and this remained while retaining the names of the basic doors that were talked about. Previously.

The doors of the Prophet's Mosque

When talking about the doors of the Prophet’s Mosque in more detail, the days of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, had 3 gates, and they are: “A door in the back, the Gate of Mercy, the Gate of Gabriel.” But when he commanded Muslims to convert the qiblah to the Kaaba, the back door was blocked, And another door opened on the north side.

Also, when Omar Ibn Al-Khattab made the expansion of the mosque, he added 3 more doors: “One in the eastern wall and it was called (The Women’s Gate), the second in the western wall and called it (Bab al-Salam), and the third in the northern wall.” Othman bin Affan, the mosque was expanded again, but nothing was added to it.

While in the era of Omar bin Abdul Aziz, during the expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque, you will find that the mosque has now 20, and they are 8 on the eastern side, and also 8 on the western side, while 4 came on the northern side.

During the visit of the Mahdi in the year 165 AH, we will find that the doors of the Prophet’s Mosque increased by 4 doors, which are private and not public, and came in the direction of the qiblah, but these doors were closed in the past when the walls of the mosque were being renewed, and only 4 of them remained.

The mosque remained stable on 4 doors until a door was added on the northern side during the Majid architecture, and that was in the year 1277 AH, so the mosque became owned by 5 doors, and they are:

- Two doors on the eastern side, namely “Gabriel’s Gate and the Women’s Gate”.

- Two gates on the western side: Gate of Peace and Gate of Mercy.

- A door on the northern side, Bab al-Majidi.

We will find that after the expansion of the first Saudi Arabia in the year 1375 AH corresponding to 1955, the Prophet’s Mosque has 10 gates, after the addition of “Bab Al Siddiq, Bab Saud, King Abdul Aziz Gate, Bab Omar, and Bab Othman.”

In 1987, Bab al-Baqi' was completed in the eastern wall, thus increasing the number of doors in the Prophet's Mosque to 11.

And when the second Saudi expansion took place, there were 5 doors, including them inside the new expansion building, and the total number of entrances to the campus came to 41, some of which consisted of one door, and the other consisted of two attached doors, and 3 doors and 5 doors were adjacent, until it became The total number is 85 chapters.

But the historical and heritage doors of the Prophet’s Mosque in detail, are:

1- Bab Gabriel:

This door is located in the eastern wall of the mosque, and it was called the Prophet's Gate, peace be upon him, due to the fact that our master Muhammad used to enter through it to pray. It was also called Bab Othman, and that was because it was located opposite the house of Othman bin Affan, while it was known as Bab Gabriel, because it was narrated that Gabriel came on a horse in the form of Dahia Al-Kalbi, and he stood at the door of the mosque and signaled to the Prophet Muhammad by marching to Qurayza.

But when Omar bin Abdul Aziz expanded the Prophet’s Mosque, he made the place of the door a door opposite the Prophet’s room, and the door was blocked when the wall was renewed, and today you will find in its place a window overlooking the outside of the mosque, and he wrote at the top of the window a verse: They believe, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

2- The women’s door:

While the second door, which Omar Ibn Al-Khattab had opened, came in the eastern wall and came to the back of the mosque. It was narrated from him that the Prophet Muhammad said: “If we leave this door for women.” And when there is an increase in any expansion of the mosque on its side, it is built in parallel with the first.

3- The Gate of Mercy:

And the third door that the Prophet Muhammad, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, opened in the western wall of the Prophet’s Mosque, and we will find that the more it was added to the mosque from its side, it was built in line with the first.

It was called the Gate of Atika, due to the fact that it was located opposite the house of Atika bint Abdullah bin Yazid bin Muawiyah, while it was called the Gate of Mercy, because it referred to the House of Judiciary, “Where many of whom the Prophet entered for dropsy was asked, so he did and was answered. With relief and mercy.”

4- The door of peace:

This door is one of the ancient historical doors, which was also known as “the door of fear and the door of reverence.” This door was opened by Omar Ibn Al-Khattab, and it was in the western wall of the mosque, and it was given this name because it is in line with the honorable confrontation, as it was the site of the visitor to greet the Prophet Muhammad. Peace be upon him.

Prophet's Mosque

Our master Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, established the Prophet’s Mosque in the first year of the Hijrah.

The Prophet’s Mosque was preceded by the Quba Mosque, according to what Saif al-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri says in his book titled “The Sealed Nectar.”

The Prophet's Mosque contains the Rawda from the Gardens of Paradise, and this was mentioned in many Islamic literature, as it witnessed dozens of centuries, in addition to the expansion outside the boundaries of the old city.

The capacity of the Prophet's Mosque

With regard to the area and capacity of the Prophet’s Mosque, when it was built, it was not more than 98 feet by 115 feet, according to what Zafar Bangash said in his article under the title “The History of the Prophet’s Mosque and the Green Dome.”
