The story of the minarets of the Prophet's Mosque

With regard to the beginning of the knowledge of minarets, it was in the era of the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, since Bilal bin Rabah called them for prayer, and that was on the roof of the nearest house to the mosque, and also at a cylinder close to the house of the mother of the believers Hafsa bint Omar, may God be pleased with her.

From that moment on, the call to prayer continued like this until the era of the Umayyad Caliph Al-Walid bin Abdul-Malik, where he ordered his governor over Medina, Omar bin Abdul Aziz, to make a major increase to the Prophet’s Mosque, in which four minarets were built, as they were on each of the corners The mosque is a minaret, and these minarets were considered the first minarets of the Prophet's Mosque.

Expansion of the minarets of the Prophet's Mosque

The Prophet’s Mosque witnessed a number of stages of expansions and improvements throughout history. During the era of the Saudi state, several huge expansions came, in order to attract large numbers of worshipers, as their numbers increased year after year.

King Abdulaziz Al Saud also made several first improvements during 1370 - 1375 AH, in which he kept the two minarets on the southern side of the Prophet’s Mosque, but the other three were removed, as King Abdul Aziz built two new minarets as an alternative in the two corners of the northern side, which reached a height of Each of them is about seventy metres.

We note that each minaret consists of four floors, and they are:

The first is a square shape that continues above the roof of the mosque, while it ends with muqarnas, which holds a square balcony.

 - The second, and you will notice that it takes the form of an octagon decorated with arches, while it ends in the form of triangles, and on top you will find muqarnas, which is topped by a balcony.

- While the third, takes the shape of a round ornament with colored pedals and you will find it ending with muqarnas, and at the top there is a distinctively circular balcony.

- The fourth, also in a round shape, with several columns that carry a group of arches ending in triangles, while you will notice that at the top of them are muqarnas and above them is a balcony.

You will also find that the expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque continued, in the years from 1406 AH to 1414 AH, when six other minarets were added, and they came at a height of 104 meters in order to become ten minarets.

It was designed in order to be consistent with the minarets that took place during the first Saudi expansion, where four of them were lined up on the north side, while the fifth was located in the southeast corner of the expansion building, and the sixth was located in the southwest corner of it.

And you will notice that each minaret consisted of five floors, the first was in the form of a square, while the second was octagonal in shape and had a diameter of 5.50 m and was covered with colored artificial stone.

There are also wooden windows between the columns, the end of which are muqarnas, which carry an octagonal balcony, while the third is round, with a diameter of 5 meters, while you will notice that its height is 18 meters, which was painted in a dark gray color next to the pedal ornaments with a prominent shape corrugated in a distinctive way that formed 12 belts so that It ends with muqarnas that carried a round balcony.

While the fourth floor came in a circular shape with a diameter of about 4.50 m, with a height of about 15 meters, and there were eight arches on it, which were based on columns that were white marble at the top with stalactites that carried a circular balcony in a charming and attractive way.

The fifth floor was distinguished by the fact that it started in a cylindrical shape and had a polygonal design and ended with a domed crown, from which the upper part came in a conical shape, followed by an onion dome, which came bearing a bronze crescent. You will notice that its height is approximately 6.70 meters, while it weighs 4.5 tons and was plated with 14 karat gold.

The expansions established by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continued, as Madinah witnessed at the end of 1434 AH, the largest expansion in the history of the Prophet’s Mosque, where its capacity increased until it reached 2 million worshipers, and that came with the end of the project’s work, and this project is considered One of the largest projects that took place in the history of the Prophet's Mosque, in addition to being the most prominent Islamic event in all parts of the earth.

The expansions did not stop at this point, as the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, continued the path of giving in the service of the Two Holy Mosques.

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques emphasized the importance of being keen to follow up the work on the major expansion project of the Prophet’s Mosque in addition to the related projects, all of which serve Islam and Muslims from all over the world, in addition to serving the people of the city of our Master Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, and its visitors by following up From the Crown Prince, as well as direct supervision by Prince Faisal bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Governor of the Medina region.

The beginning of the minarets of the Prophet's Mosque

It should be noted that there were no minarets for the Noble Prophet’s Mosque in the era of Muhammad, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, nor also in the era of his rightly-guided caliphs, where it is sufficient for the muezzin who climbs on something high, as Bilal bin Rabah, may God be pleased with him, used to call for dawn and that from above a woman’s house From Bani Najjar.

And our Master Muhammad, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “No one hears the extent of the voice of the muezzin, whether jinn or people or anything, but he will testify for him on the Day of Resurrection.” Abu Saeed said: I heard it from the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace.” Sahih al-Bukhari.

This explains that because of the need to raise the call to prayer from a high place, the Muslims in Madinah moved to place the call to prayer from the level of the mosque’s roof to a higher roof and it was the roof of the neighboring houses, and after it to the roof of the Prophet’s Mosque, and after it something was built in order to increase its height, Until the minarets were formed and came to different heights, and they remained from history to history in which there were differences and expansions until they remained in their shape at the present time, and there are still many continuous improvements.

At the end of the report, we hope that we have been able to provide information and details about the minarets of the Prophet's Mosque, and the expansions that have taken place in it until the present time.
