The biggest pillar of the pilgrimage is Mount Arafat

We find that the largest pillar of the pilgrimage is Mount Arafat, and the rites of pilgrimage would not be complete without it, as with the rising of the sun on the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah, the pilgrim would leave Mina to go to Arafat to stand there.

The pilgrims stand in Arafat until it is realized that the pilgrim is present in any part of Arafat, if he is standing, riding or lying down.

Standing on Arafat is one of the most important pillars of Hajj, without which the rituals are not complete, as our Master Muhammad, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “The Hajj is Arafa, so whoever comes before the dawn prayer on the night of gathering, his Hajj has been completed.”

We also find that there were some hadiths of the Prophet that were talking about the virtues of this day, the most prominent of which are:

And Abu Huraira narrated on the authority of our master Muhammad that he said: “God is proud of the people of Arafat, the people of heaven, and he says to them: Look at my servants who came to me disheveled in the dust.”

- Also, Lady Aisha narrated that the Prophet said: “There is no more day on which God frees slaves from the Fire than the day of Arafat, and that he is approaching his manifestation, then he brags about them to the angels, saying: What did these want? My angels bear witness that I have forgiven them.”

The time to stand on the largest pillar of the pilgrimage, Mount Arafat

After we talked about Mount Arafat, the largest and most important pillar of the pilgrimage, you should know the time of standing in Arafat, which is from the sunset of the day of Arafat until the dawn of the next day, that is, on the first day of Eid al-Adha.

The next step is for the pilgrim to pray the “Duhr and Asr” prayers in Arafat, so that they are combined with one adhan and two iqaamahs.

We find that it is mustahabb for the pilgrim on the day of Arafa to try a lot of supplication and the Talbiyah, and this is according to the words of the Prophet Muhammad: “The best supplication is the supplication of the day of Arafa, and the best of what I and the prophets before me have said is that there is no god but God alone who has no partner, for Him is the King and His praise, and He is over all things.”

The pilgrims remain on Mount Arafat until sunset. At sunset, the pilgrims flee from Arafat to Muzdalifah, and that is to spend the night there.

Then the pilgrim prays the Maghrib and Isha prayers, and this is in the plural of delay, and this means that he delays the Maghrib prayer and this is until the time for dinner begins, and that is with frequent supplications and saying many supplications.

The next step is for the pilgrim to collect the pebbles, and after that he spends the night in Muzdalifah, and that is until he performs the dawn prayer.

It is also disliked for the pilgrim to fast on this day, because our master Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, stopped breaking his fast, when a mug of milk was sent to him and he drank it.

On the day of Arafat there is a sermon, after which he performs the Zuhr and Asr prayers, a gathering of offering two rak’ahs, and here he does not have to recite the Qur’an aloud in them, as it is with the call to prayer and two iqaamahs, during which you do not perform the supererogatory prayers, and then you enter Arafat.

Mount Arafat and the reason for the name

Many people do not know the reason for naming Mount Arafat, as Al-Nisaburi said: “Arafat is the plural of Arafat.” Also, Al-Tabarsi said: “Arafat: a name for the well-known spot at which one must stand, and the day of Arafat is the day of standing.”

There are many sayings about naming Mount Arafat by this name, as it was said that the reason for calling it by that name is that Adam knew Eve in it.

It was also said that he was called by this name because Gabriel knew Abraham in the rituals, and also for people to know them, and it was also said that the word was taken from the custom, which is the good, and this is due to the fact that it is sacred.

But we find that the two narrations that are considered the most certain are that the father of mankind, Adam, met Eve and in this place they met after their exodus from Paradise, so he was called Arafa.

While the second confirmed narration is that Gabriel had circumambulated the Prophet Ibrahim, where he would show him the scenes and rituals of Hajj, and he would say to him: “Do you know, did you know?” Ibrahim says: “I knew, I knew.” That is why it was called Arafa.

Mistakes to avoid when standing in Arafah

The pilgrims, in order to complete the Hajj rituals correctly, must avoid a number of mistakes in order not to fall into them, for this reason they should pay close attention.

Here are a number of mistakes that the pilgrim must avoid on this day in order to complete the rituals of Hajj, including:

It is not necessary to go outside the borders of Arafat.

- Many pilgrims stay in their places of descent until the sun sets, and then they go to Muzdalifah. And that matter is considered one of the wrong things, as it should not fall into it. Leaving Arafat before sunset is considered impermissible, as it is contrary to the Prophet’s action.

- Some pilgrims flock and go in a rush in order to climb Mount Arafat, in addition to reaching its summit and wiping with it and praying on it.

- Among the mistakes that pilgrims make is facing Mount Arafat during supplication, and we find that it is Sunnah to face the qiblah when supplicating.

The importance of Mount Arafat

Mount Arafat is of great importance in addition to being the largest pillar in the pillars of Hajj when standing on it on the day of Arafat, and it is considered all Hajj and also one of its most important pillars, as the Messenger of God - may God’s prayers and peace be upon him - said: Hajj is Arafa.

We find that on that blessed spot of the earth, the pilgrims of the Sacred House of God gather on the ninth day of the month of Dhul-Hijjah.

Mount Arafat is located approximately 21 kilometers from the holy city of Makkah, with an area of approximately 10 and a half square kilometers, as it has clear boundaries.

Many people are confused between Arafat and Arafat, but we find that there is a big difference between Arafat and Arafat, so the meaning here in general is the position of pilgrims on the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah.

There are a number of sayings in this regard, where they say that there are no major differences. Some believe that Arafat is the name of the mountain and the known spot of land, while Arafat is considered the day on which the standing is made on this spot.

But others said that Arafat considers the plural and its singular is Arafat, as each piece is Arafat, and we will find that the sum of those pieces is Arafat, and other gossip regarding this matter, but all of this shows how important it is and that it is an essential and main part of the Hajj.

At the end of our article, we should mention the importance of the greatest pillar of Hajj, Mount Arafat, as it is the basis for completing the rituals of Hajj, and the individual who goes for Hajj must know how important it is and avoid mistakes that may occur while standing in Arafat.
